This course aims to provide the students with the essential sociolinguistic concepts, and to increase the students’ sociolinguistic competence and sensitivity.
Introduction to Linguistics I, II
Class participation and homework 25% Homework: o Small-scale research, observation of language uses, reflection, and etc. o E3 submission (by Wednesday night) & class discussion o 15 percent off the grade for late submission of any homework Midterm exam 25% Final exam 25% Group project 25% o Mostly two people in one group o Oral presentation required (around 40 minutes) o Presentation materials to be discussed with the instructor during class breaks or/and after class, at least one week before the presentation o Written report submitted within three weeks after your presentation

(note: The sixth edition is available in both hard copy and e-file formats from our library. It is not significantly different from the fifth edition and the fourth edition, which are published in 2017 and 2013 respectively, and can also be used for this course.)
