The properties of chemical compounds are closely related to their form and symmetry. A deep understanding of molecular symmetry is essential for grasping the fundamentals of chemistry and analyzing the chemical and physical properties of substances. Molecular symmetry determines many aspects of a molecule, including the symmetry of molecular orbitals and vibrations, the degeneracy of energy levels, and selection rules. Group theory provides a mathematical framework for analyzing molecular symmetry to understand these physical and chemical properties. This course will cover the fundamentals of group theory, including symmetry operations and elements, molecular symmetry groups, representations, and eigenvalues.
Students should have a basic knowledge of physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
