If you think there's no need for humans anymore because AI is eventually taking over, think again. Technologies do not replace human activity but CHANGE them, often in ways that we could not have predicted. Besides the general fear or hope centering on AI replacing humans, extending and/or expanding on human ability is equally the other core principle AI, robotics, and computings simultaneously share. Augmentation of human ability means making us more powerful and able, not less. We will use these new technologies to enhance all of our existing abilities such as creativity, innovation, and of course, art. When you ask, why does AI want to further its own generative AI image production abilities? Its current answer is to communicate with people. Art is generally understood to define humanity, to be one of our defining features on a species level. So no, we will not stop making art. In fact, in this AI Era, we will be making more art and more people will become artists. And what is a better way to study such human practice if not through sex and gender, the one most honest quality of humanity? All are welcomed (seriously), but those who are struggling and seeking personal answers should receive priority boarding. This course is focused on analyzing how the diverse sexuality expressions and gender identities are represented in media culture through examining old/new media artists’ works paired with corresponding theoretical perspectives before and after the Internet. Texts from feminist, men’s studies and queer theorists will be discussed to encourage critical thinking towards images of the body, sex (porn literacy), and sexuality in the media. The practical aspects of this class seek to highlight political and critical uses of technology in art, to challenge and discourse existing ideas of sex and gender, and to creatively embody such discourses in each student’s own chosen practice.
