This course focuses on the syntax of argument structure. In the first few weeks, we will get to understand the basic concept of argument and then turn to discuss what argument structure really is. In the current linguistic theory, argument can be added into the structure with the help of different heads. We will look at valence-increasing and valence-decreasing constructions in a variety of languages. By examining the syntactic structures of different constructions, the enrolled students will better understand the fundamentals of syntax and have the ability to read more advanced research papers.
Introduction to Linguistics
Reading is essential and important to this course. If you cannot spend (at least) 50 minutes on required reading per week, please do not take this course for credit.
