素養導向英語教學

In response to the call of developing core competencies in contemporary education (e.g., the General Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education), the course aims to expand students’teaching repertoire from skill-based to competency-based TESOL instruction. Thematic units covered in the course includes a sociocultural perspective of language education, competency-based curriculum development, pedagogical approaches used to deliver such a curriculum, and core values highlighted in contemporary education (e.g., interculturality, creativity, criticality, and SDGs). Students will have opportunities to develop three kinds of knowledge related to competency-based TESOL instruction: theoretical knowledge (i.e., sociocultural theories of language education), pedagogical knowledge (i.e., teaching approaches and empirical studies related to competency-based language teaching) and experiential knowledge (i.e., practice, observation of practice, and reflection on practice). Students will develop the theoretical and pedagogical knowledge through reading course materials, participating/facilitating seminar discussion, attending guest speeches, and conducting literature review on a selected topic. Their experiential knowledge will be developed through observation of experienced teachers' practices, mini-lessons demonstration in class, and reflection on their practices.

Course materials consists of book chapters and journal articles from various sources. They will be provided in a course package.
