In short, we define globalization literally as though it is a geographical fact, but we will discover that it is driven by specific economic processes that have subtler unseen political ramifications. As a phenomenon, it overlaps with what we call transnationalism. But as a process, transnationalism is logically incompatible with globalization. The fact that both occur in parallel is then the source of our confusion. The role that culture plays in both, as well as the kind of politics that is invoked, is different. The literature is thus flawed conceptually and fraught by incompatible perspectives coming from varied disciplines and positions. The first 10 topics listed are core themes. The next 5 topics are intensive discussions of case studies. The focus is first on reading, analyzing and discussing, openly in class as a basis for developing detailed approach for intensive study. Toward this goal, weekly discussions of the reading are important; there is no set agenda.

教學方法及教學相關配合事項(如助教、網站或圖書及資料庫等): Open discussion of core readings marked * on the syllabus (essential, required reading for all) will be followed by oral presentations by students on secondary readings marked + on the syllabus. The purpose of the presentations is mainly to allow students an opportunity to freely express thoughts while at the same time expand our overall coverage of the literature.

At the end of term, students are required to submit a research paper, which will be the sole basis of the course grade. Class discussions and presentations will facilitate this end. 期末作業 100%
