This 3-credit credit graduate seminar, entitled Music and Technology: Sight, Sound, and Space 音樂與科技:視覺、聲音與空間focuses on how science and technology integrate into the lives of composers and listeners from the mid 18th to the mid 20th centuries. We explore how optical instruments and optical science, and discoveries in ophthalmology served as an inspiration for composers, promoting them to use different ways to cope with timbre, staging, and acoustic space. The course is divided into 3 parts, with technology serving as a “red thread” weaving in and out of our discussion about music in relationship to optical technology and theatrical space. Sight (part 1) and Sound (part 2) concerns the discussion of optical illusion and 18th- and 19th-century European culture. We explore the optical instruments used in optical science, medical studies, and entertainment industry, and how they led new music instrument and new ways in the symphony and the opera. Space (part 3) focuses on repertories involving acoustic space, especially theatrical spaces calculated to contribute to music compositions of grander scale. English will be the primary language in the course instruction.
