Learning Objectives The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the usability and functionality of interactive systems in a systematic manner, taking into account the demands and behaviors of their intended audiences. Course Audience The course does not require any prior knowledge or experience. Its goal is to teach you about basic user experience research and usability evaluation by giving you both methodology and hands-on experience. This class is for graduate and undergraduate students (mostly graduate students) from different levels and fields of study. In fact, I'd like to boost the course's diversity by selecting students from various academic disciplines. By working on projects with those who see the world differently, students learn more. Course Description This course teaches skills and concepts that are used on a daily basis by most user experience (UX) professionals, including researchers and designers. This course teaches you how to conduct user research and evaluate the UX (mostly usability) of an interactive system based on the needs and context of the target users. These skills are essential in human computer interaction (HCI) and should be mastered if you want to work in this field in the future. These skills include: 1. Creating an interaction flow diagram (a diagram of the system's response to user input). 2. Conducting interviews to better understand the needs, tasks, contexts, and goals of target users 3. Developing personas and scenarios 4. Conducting a survey to elicit feedback and experiences 5. Comparing your system's features and usability to that of comparable systems 6. Using checklists and heuristics to evaluate the system from various perspectives 7. Conducting user testing of common system tasks The course connects learning and doing. We will provide background information on these skills and concepts, teach you how to apply them, have you practice them in class, and then have you use them on a specific product. You will not only learn how to use them, but also which methods give you what results for what amount of work. You will complete a series of milestones throughout the semester, each of which you will present to me and turn in a presentation-style report (e.g. in powerpoint). You will learn how to communicate your project, method, and the reasoning behind important methodological decisions in this manner. This is a valuable and necessary skill for your future career.
The resources for the course are hosted on Google Drive. Additionally, assignment submissions will be done via Google Drive. The instructors will make announcements through a Facebook Group. So, you need to have a Facebook account.
Project and Assignment During the first class activity, we will form the project teams. Once at midterm and once at the conclusion of the semester, you will provide "peer review" to assess the overall participation and contribution of each group member to the course project. The end-of-semester peer evaluations will be used to determine class participation marks. After forming groups, your first responsibility will be to choose a product (a website, device, or software application) and create a semester plan. During the first two class meetings, we will review the criteria for selecting an appropriate product for evaluation. You will submit each assignment milestone as a presentation-style report (e.g., slides) and present it to me orally (a 30-60 minute appointment, depending on the milestone). Five criteria will be used to determine the report's grade: 1) overall report quality, 2) method design and execution, 3) findings and recommendations, 4) discussion and reflection, and 5) oral presentation. It is crucial to maintain clarity, concentration, and professionalism throughout your report. Grading: The percentage breakdown of your grade is 80% project and 20% class participation. There is no individual homework. Note that 20% of your grade will be determined by your participation in class. Participation in the course will take the form of presentations, class participation, and in-class exercises, among others. It is essential to remember that class participation is distinct from project participation (as assessed through peer evaluation). Note that a free-rider recognized by a group (with group agreement) will receive an additional grade penalty of up to 70%.
