This course provides an introduction to the statistical description of particles and fields. Grading policy: 35% midterm exam, 30% final presentation, 35% homework
Introduction to Thermodynamic Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Many textbooks cover the content of this course. For example "Statistical Mechanics" by Pathria and Beale "Elements of Statistical Mechanics" by Sachs, Sen, & Sexton "Statistical Mechanics" by Shang-Keng Ma "Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics" by Gene F. Mazenko
The course provides a brief review of thermodynamics followed by a discussion on probability distributions before discussing the statistical underpinnings of thermodynamics. The different statistical ensembles will be discussed, and an introduction to quantum statistics will be provided. The last quarter of the course will be devoted to selected topics centered around paradigmatic models of statistical mechanics, partition functions as functional integrals, phase transitions, scaling, and the renormalization group.

We will not follow a particular textbook but the material of the course is discussed in any of the standard books on the subjet, for example: Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics by David Chandler
