This is an introductory course to strongly correlated electron systems. Strong electron-electron interactions in certain solids with d- or f- orbitals lead to many new quantum ground states. Students in this course will learn basic physics of some of the most interesting quantum phenomena in these materials, including high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates, quantum magnetism in strongly correlated Mott insulators, Kondo effect in quantum impurity systems. Two main goals for this course: 1. To understand these phenomena via quantum mechanics and solid state physics. 2. To quantify these phenomena by calculatng physical observables.
