From Collins dictionary: "... a colloquium is an informal gathering of experts for discussion... it derives from Latin com = together and loqui = speak." In science, colloquia play an especially important role as the primary vehicle for spreading and receiving knowledge to and from your area of expertise. Their informal nature enables non-experts to understand new ideas, thereby transferring knowledge across the boundaries of otherwise specialized research domains. This distinguishes the colloquium from the seminar, which is its specialized counterpart. Due to their importance, colloquia are reserved for the deepest thinkers and strongest researchers in a field, and they are important dates in the academic calendar. In this course, we will listen to colloquia given by some of Taiwan's keenest minds. In addition, some time will be put aside to discuss aspects of DEI and to listen to broad-access, so-called public lectures. Through attendance and participation in the discussions, we will learn about the broad fields of physics and expand our learning horizons. Confirmed colloquia range from the study of quantum entanglement to seismology.
Your grade will be made up of a combination of attendance and participation, for example through asking questions or participating in quizzes. Details will be discussed in the first week of the course.
