概述

What do solid state and high energy physics have in common? It turns out that even though solid-state physics studies how different materials behave and forms our basic understanding of all electrical applications, including semiconductors, it has - maybe surprisingly - many commonalities and concepts that it shares with high-energy physics, which is the study of the origin of the universe and the most fundamental laws of nature. In this seminar, EP solid state and IoP high energy physics join forces to explore how we can learn from each other. Through presentations and discussions, we will uncover the bigger-picture physics processes going on behind the scenes in both fields. By working together, we will learn how to address long-standing problems in both domains and perhaps finally solve them. On our journey we will encounter topics on quantum computing, machine learning, quantum field theory, statistical physics and mathematics. Topics that we want to discuss are: - Superconductivity, strange metals, quark gluon plasmas and other phases of matter - Hamiltonian versus Lagrangian QFT and the spectral reconstruction problem - Quantum advantage, setting expectations and reasonable goals - Limits in QFT and their connection to physical systems
