概述

As traffic crashes on the road increasingly add substantial social costs to the transportation system, there is an increasing demand in traffic safety professionals. Traffic safety is not only a multidisciplinary but also interdisciplinary field, as it involves human factors, vehicle design, roadway design, and their interactions. The course also aims to keep students abreast of recent state-of-the-art engineering and policy practices, and scientific advances.

先修科目

This course assumes that you have a good grasp of the concepts and materials covered in Statistics and Traffic Engineering.

ASSIGNMENTS There are two types of work you will do during the semester: homework, reading assignments, and a term project. Students are encouraged to work with others in the class. 1. Case study/Reading assignment (Each team is tasked with choosing a journal paper to present to the class during the initial hour of our weekly meetings). For the assignment, each team will need to select a paper listed the last page of the syllabus and address the following questions in 5 slides (oral presentation and a 1-page report one week after the presentation)(if there are more than one papers listed, you have the freedom to choose either one): a. What is the research question? • What challenges to be addressed in the paper? • Why this research question is important? b. The study design of the paper (what is the idea to “solve” the problem?). c. Research results and implications d. Assess the robustness of the results and identify research needed to further address the research question raised in the paper 2. Term project: The term project involves evaluating the effects of (1) seatbelt, (2) speed limits, or (3) advance driver assist system on safety, and discuss it in great detail. Real-world data will be made available to analyze these topics. Each team has to choose a project topic from the topics listed above. The maximum group size is 3. There will be significant emphasis on the use of the statistical software STATA (STATA 15). This software is ONLY free to students WHO SIGN UP FOR THIS CLASS. My expectation for the two presentations are as follows: a. Midterm Presentation: literature review (“system analysis”), study design, and progress on data analysis b. Final Presentation: analysis results (interpret the results and discuss implications) GRADING Term project with two progress briefings (50% in total (20% and 30%, respectively)), two research paper briefing (30%), class participation (students are encouraged to ask and answer questions, contribute information, and express their views on subject matter) (20%) (no midterm and final exams).
