Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the purposes and functions of epidemiologic studies; 2. Learn the methods of describing distribution of health status in population; 3. Identify and distinguish epidemiological study designs and their features; 4. Estimate and interpret the measure of association in epidemiologic studies; 5. Recognize and analyze the source of confounding, information bias, and selection bias; 6. Critically review epidemiologic publications and assess the research quality.
This course offers an introduction to the fundamental principles and concepts used in epidemiologic research. It covers the basics of study designs, measurement of disease occurrence, and the identification and management of confounding and bias in epidemiologic studies. Through a combination of lectures, laboratory sessions, and exams, students will gain practical experience in applying principles of epidemiology to critically appraise and interpret findings from published research. This course is essential for students pursuing careers in public health, medicine, and related fields.
Midterm assignment (Take-home exam): 30% Final exam (In-class exam): 30% Class participation: 40% (10% per lab session)
