概述

As artificial intelligence grows more sophisticated, speculation is mounting about whether AI could eventually become conscious - or even self-aware, as imagined in films like 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some observers, including former Google engineer Blake Lemoine and Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, have suggested that this momentous development may already have occurred. But how seriously should we take such claims? And even if premature, could AI ever become conscious in principle? If so, what conditions would it need to meet? This course invites students to explore these questions by engaging with a range of classic and contemporary texts in the philosophy of mind and AI—beginning with Alan Turing and extending to the latest debates. After clarifying key concepts such as AI, mind, and consciousness, we will assess the credibility of computationalism: the view that thought and consciousness are reducible to the right kind of computation. We will also examine two influential neuroscientific theories of consciousness - Global Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory - and ask whether they shed light on the question of conscious AI. Finally, we will consider what a credible test for AI consciousness might involve, and reflect on the ethical implications that would follow if an AI were to pass such a test.

評分方式

The assessment scheme for this course will consist of three parts: a. Class participation: attendance & participation in discussion according to stated expectations. (Total = 30% of overall grade) b. First paper: Students will write a paper (betw. 3,000 & 4,000 words long, in English) on any topic discussed between weeks 2 and 8, and will present and discuss an initial draft of it in class. (35% of overall grade) c. Second paper: Students will write a paper (betw. 3,000 & 4,000 words long, in English) on a different topic from the first paper, and will again present and discuss an initial draft of it in class. (35% of overall grade) [Use of generative AI tools must be transparently acknowledged. Students remain fully responsible for the philosophical content and argumentative quality of their work.]
