Martial arts have been an important practice that involves the integration of mind and body in the East Asian tradition. In the tradition of China, in particular, martial arts have been deeply rooted in Daoist philosophy, as well as Confucian and Buddhist philosophies. Core ideas such as emptiness, spontaneity, wu-wei, heaven-and-man being a harmonious one, qi, shi, and the like figure centrally in the principles of classical martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuang. There have been some efforts to explicate these core ideas, but they remain highly obscure in a contemporary context. The purpose of this seminar is to delve deeper into the philosophical foundation of martial arts with a focus on Ta Chi Chuang from cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. The practice of martial arts in general and Tai Chi Chuang in particular has a deep connection to Daoist philosophy particularly and Chinese philosophy generally. In light of this, this course is divided into three main topics: (1) Philosophical reconstruction of martial arts and Tai Chi Chuang (2) Neuroscientific study of martial arts and Tai Chi Chuang (3) Practice of Tai Chi Chuang We will read and discuss philosophical materials that include classics of Tai Chi Chuang and other traditional martial arts, classics of Daoist philosophy such as Dao De Jing and the Zhuangzi, Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy with a special focus on martial arts and Tai Chi Chuang. We will also study and read scientifically oriented researches such as Flow Experience, Background Theory, and Spatiotemporal Neuroscience with a focus on their link to Tai Chi Chuang and martial arts. To get in touch with real practices, we will invite six guest speakers with expertise in both academia and practice to talk about topics related to the history, culture, social organization, sports science, Chinese medicine, rehabilitation and Daoist medicine with a focus on Tai Chi Chuang. We will also recruit a competent practitioner of Tai Chi Chuang as a tutor for the participants of this seminar. In each class meeting, the first hour will be engaging in the actual practice of Tai Chi Chuang tutored by our teaching assistant, followed by two hours of seminar discussions of the reading material assigned each week. The ultimate goal of this seminar is to address the issue of health both physically and mentally in a way that integrates the tradition and the modern, the east and the west, the theory and the practice, the mind and the body, through a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of martial arts and Tai Chi Chuang.
