Pain is a pervasive feature of our lives. Think of the many times you have experienced pain. From stubbing your toe on a chair, to burning your tongue on hot food or coffee. These small pains punctuate our daily routines. Other pains are more profound: pains such as the experience of giving birth is something that many people describe as the worst pain they have ever undergone. We also experience psychological pain, suffering grief and emotional distress at the loss of a significant other. Given the ubiquity of pain, and its puzzling nature - seemingly at once a paradigmatic mental state but also a bodily phenomenon - pain is a topic that is ripe for philosophical investigation. What is the nature of the unpleasantness of pain, and how is this experiential aspect generated? What is the relation between physical and psychological pain? Is pain necessarily a bad thing? Can we learn anything from going through pains? Indeed, is pain something that is learned in a cultural setting? Does pain transform us in any personal or epistemological ways, providing us with new knowledge or frameworks and values?
