Through participation in the course, the student will be able to: 1. Analyze the health industry ecosystem and emerging trends – To examine the structure, key stakeholders, and technological advancements shaping the healthcare sector, including digital health, AI-driven solutions, and personalized medicine. 2. Implement cutting-edge health technology solutions – To design proof-of-concept prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs) for healthcare applications. 3. Understand business models and funding strategies for health startups – To explore business models (B2B, B2C, SaaS, platform-based) and investment options (venture capital, grants, public-private partnerships) to sustain and scale health innovations. 4. Formulate data-driven business proposals for health innovations – To utilize market research, competitive analysis, and financial modeling to create a sustainable business model and proposal with explicit revenue models, cost structures, and go-to-market strategies. 5. Execute commercialization strategies for innovative healthcare products – To learn venture capital funding, grant writing, and strategic partnerships for health-tech businesses, develop a pitch deck, and present a compelling case to investors and stakeholders.
The course equips students with the skills to identify unmet healthcare needs and invent, develop, and implement innovative medical technologies that address these challenges. Through a hands-on, multidisciplinary approach, participants work in teams to create novel solutions, learning critical skills in needs-finding, invention, prototyping, clinical validation, and commercialization. The curriculum emphasizes a structured, repeatable process for healthcare innovation, blending expertise from engineering, medicine, and business. Students gain mentorship from industry leaders and medical professionals and opportunities to engage with the broader healthcare ecosystem, ultimately preparing them to bring breakthrough technologies to market and improve patient care. Combining scientific and engineering attitudes, thinking about the essence of innovation and entrepreneurship, integrating technology and business knowledge, allowing students to simulate the thinking of entrepreneurs in the classroom, gain inspiration from actual cases, and think and learn about entrepreneurship with the attitude of "understanding entrepreneurship and participating in innovation."
1. Attendance (20%) 2. Class participation (20%) 3. Midterm project (30 %) For the midterm project, students will develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) for a health industry innovation. This includes: • Problem Definition & User Identification: Clearly define the problem, target users, and key features of the proposed solution. • Regulatory Strategy: Identify major compliance requirements and outline a pathway for future certification. • Preliminary Validation: Conduct basic testing (e.g., usability evaluation, small-scale data analysis) to demonstrate initial feasibility. 4. Final presentation (30 %) For the final presentation, students will develop and deliver a comprehensive startup pitch, including: • Business Proposal: Define the problem, solution, market opportunity, and competitive landscape. • Financial Model: Present revenue projections, cost structures, and funding requirements. • Go-to-Market Strategy: Outline distribution channels, scalability plans, and potential partnerships with healthcare providers or tech firms.
