概述

This course has three objectives: 1) Present students with a survey of ancient, classical, and contemporary texts covering Indian approaches to ontology, consciousness, and the practice of meditation; 2) Facilitate critical analyses and comparative discussions by reading the assigned readings; 3) Develop a research topic on one of the primary themes and write a scholarly paper. Prehistorical and ancient Indian thinkers developed sophisticated philosophical approaches to fundamental ontological questions concerning consciousness/mind, perception, and ontology with some of the earliest writings on these topics appearing around 1500 BCE. During India’s classical era, sophisticated treatises on meditation informed the subsequent philosophical arguments of Yoga, Tantra, Buddhism, Jainism, and other Brahmanical schools. These ancient and classical writings provide contemporary researchers explorations and insights into consciousness and perception. To understand the complex interaction of these traditions and the historical evolution of their methods, we will read Classical Indian Philosophy by Peter Adamson and Jonardon Ganeri (Oxford University Press, 2020). Students will engage with contemporary analyses of Indian and Tibetan meditation by reading Samādhi: The Numinous and Cessative in Indo-Tibetan Yoga by Stuart Ray Sarbacker (State University of New York, 2005). We will also consider the earliest account of ontology and meditation by reading my published work.
