Social media have deeply integrated into lives of millions of people for a wide variety of purposes. What are social media, and why do they matter for democracy? How do they shape politics, activism, and everyday life? What roles do social media and their algorithms play in news circulation and political communication? Throughout the course, we will work toward answering these questions. Students will critically analyze the societal impact of social media and apply insights to real-world contexts as researchers, curators, and informed users.
