Metabolic Engineering is broadly defined as using genetic tools to modify the cellular metabolic pathways and regulations to achieve a particular phenotype. Such phenotype typically includes the optimization of biomass formation and/or production of valuable compounds including those that form biofuels, biochemicals, drug precursors, etc. The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the field of metabolic engineering and its application in current biochemical industry. This course focuses on the biochemistry and metabolic pathways for the production of useful biochemicals.
Biochemistry II or general knowledge of metabolism is required.
