The ultimate goal of this course is to create. Throughout the semester, the instructor will guide students to produce original works based on their own interests or areas of expertise. In the realm of contemporary art, “contemporary” itself is a slippery term—every person, society, and era has its own present moment. “Art” is equally elusive; although everyone defines it differently, what unites every definition is the act of creating. You must begin to create—whether in words, objects, images, sound or videos. Cross-disciplinary design (or cross-disciplinary art) specifically addresses solutions and creative endeavors that leap beyond traditional fields or draw on methods from multiple disciplines. The course will introduce a few of works in contemporary art and cross-disciplinary design from the 20th century to today, roughly organized by period and category. Yet artistic practice often blurs boundaries, so we will also introduce certain creative elements within works and follow those elements across similar projects. Sometimes you will discover that an idea you find “cool”had already been “used” sixty years ago. This need not be discouraging; on the contrary, it proves you can think along lines that have excited others. By exploring the original context of those works—and by approaching them from your own contemporary vantage—you can still create. The instructor firmly believes that persistent practice will lead you to develop completely distinctive works. Approach this course with an embrace of imperfection. The instructor values the creative process over the final product. The process of creating is always messy and disorderly. Students are encouraged to reveal their most authentic thought processes so we can discuss them together. By the end of the term, students will begin to appreciate art more deeply and to recognize which creative elements resonate with him/her, enabling him/her to continue producing original works.
Students must understand that this course requires you to create—in any form you choose. Beyond that, no specific background knowledge is needed. Before enrolling, ask yourself: 1. Have you ever had an idea you found intriguing but that didn’t fit neatly into any non-art discipline? 2. Have you ever encountered something on any platform that others scoffed at, yet you secretly liked it? 3. Is there an experience or thing you love—or once loved? (What does it mean to love something? A good question to keep in mind.)
