Course Description This workshop primarily focuses on active listening, aiming to equip students with essential listening and speaking language skills. The course offers a practical, hands-on approach to listening, note-taking, and summarizing, with a strong emphasis on weekly practice using BBC 6-Minute English programs. Students are expected to be active participants, engaging in note-taking, summarizing key points of the program, and giving presentations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the listening process. Additionally, we’ll explore how to leverage online applications and digital tools, including AI chatbots, to refine and enhance your summaries. Each week, you’ll listen to a program two or three times, taking notes (during the first part of class). Through in-class “listening exercises” and by writing down key points and words, students will be trained to grasp the crucial ideas of the program and develop necessary test-taking skills for English proficiency exams. Immediately after notes are taken, you’ll give a presentation using your notes (in the second part of class). By the end of the semester, you’ll have 12 summaries that will serve as a portfolio showcasing your achievements in this class. In the third part of class, students will engage in open discussion, offering critiques or critical responses to the program’s content and their fellow students’ presentations. Course Objectives 1. To cultivate students’ active learning skills. 2. To strengthen their narrative and reflective abilities. 3. To create a conducive foreign language learning environment and enhance students’ international mobility.
