This course introduces students to the fundamentals of college-level writing, with a strong emphasis on grammar, sentence structure, and the development of analytical thinking. Through close reading and critical reflection on a diverse selection of literary texts, students will learn to write definition essays, compare-and-contrast analyses, and argumentative essays. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate competence in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, apply a range of rhetorical strategies, engage critically with literary texts through writing, support a clear thesis with textual evidence, and revise their work effectively in response to feedback.

Policies Participation and Attendance: One point (out of ten) will be deducted from your total attendance score for each hour of class missed without a valid excuse. Acceptable excuses include documented sick leave, official leave, or mental health leave. Please note that perfect attendance does not automatically guarantee a full ten points for attendance and participation. Active engagement in class discussions is also essential. Late Work: Late submissions will not be accepted, except under circumstances of illness or emergencies. In such cases, a two-day extension may be granted. It is crucial to be mindful of assignment deadlines and manage your time effectively. Final Scores: Once the computation of your final grade is complete, you will be informed via a group email. You will then have a 24-hour window to contact me if you have any questions about your grades. Once this 24-hour period has passed, your final grade will be considered official. Paper Format: I do not grade drafts that significantly deviate from our MLA formatting guidelines. AI-Assisted Writing: You should avoid using tools like ChatGPT to produce your first draft or to generate arguments on your behalf. These tools are best used during later stages of revision—for refining prose, clarifying structure, or checking grammar. Always verify any factual claims generated by AI and ensure that the final work reflects your own critical thinking and original analysis. Plagiarism: Should you incorporate ideas from others, it is vital to attribute them properly in your writing. Maintaining academic integrity is of the utmost importance. Cases of plagiarism will lead to a score of 0 points for the specific assignment, and the infraction will be recorded. Email Etiquette: Please call me Richard, Chung-Hao, or Prof. Ku in our email exchanges. Feel free to reach out if you need to report sick/personal leave, ask simple questions, or schedule an appointment. Kindly review our syllabus before sending your inquiries. Also, when crafting an email, you need to formulate an apt subject line (for example, "English Composition: Questions about Essay 1") and remember to identify yourself.
