This course is designed to cultivate students’ communication skills through the engaging format of Public Forum Debate, conducted entirely in English. Each week, students will explore current and relevant topics, developing their ability to articulate well-reasoned arguments, conduct effective research to support their claims, and listen critically to diverse perspectives. Through in-class discussions, presentations, and practice debates, students will hone their persuasive speaking techniques and master the specific structure and strategies of Public Forum Debate. The midterm assessment will evaluate their understanding and application of these principles within a full Public Forum Debate. Towards the end of the course, students will also be introduced to the fundamental concepts of Simplified Parliamentary Debate, providing a broader understanding of different debate styles and further enhancing their adaptability in spoken communication. By the conclusion of this course, students will have significantly strengthened their oral communication fluency, argumentation skills, critical thinking abilities, research capabilities, and confidence in expressing themselves persuasively and effectively in English within academic and public discourse.

You will share your opinions and feedback in class. They will be scored accordingly. Your absence will result in no scores. Speak in each class. ◦ The first-half-of-semester participation score will be shown to you during midterm. ◦ Attendance: ◦ Unnecessary and un-notified absence is not recommended. If you should be absent from class, you must obtain an official leave through Students’ Leave Application System. ◦ Unnotified leave is also not recommended, even if you obtain an official leave through Students’ Leave Application System. ◦ You may take up to 3 leaves per semester. Each leave after the third time will result in 2 points off the final grade. ◦ Unnotified leave results in 2 points off the final grade. If you don’t show up on your presentation, the assignment will be graded 0. Grading of presentations: ◦ Group presentations mean each member in the same group gets the same score in the assignment. Please note that the course schedule and content are tentative. Changes might occur according to students’ learning needs. Attendance & Late Policy Missing class means you’ll miss the opportunity to contribute and shine, and this will be reflected in your scores. Please be aware of the following policies regarding leave requests: o Arriving 10 minutes after the scheduled class time will result in an unexcused absence. For the following types of leave, please communicate your absence and any arrangements for missed work promptly. o Sick Leave (病假): A doctor’s note is required for all sick leave requests. o Menstrual Leave (生理假): You may take menstrual leave twice per semester without providing a doctor’s note. o Official Business Leave (公假) & Bereavement Leave (喪假): In all cases of absence, you are responsible for catching up on any missed material. Please share updates on your missed work with me the week after your return. Important Note on Bereavement Leave: Do not falsely claim a grandparent’s death multiple times. | 第 11 週 | Final Focus: Telling the Winning Story • The goal of the final focus speech. • Strategic issue selection and persuasive framing in the final focus. • Practice delivering final focus speeches. |
| 第 12 週 | OFF to prepare for Final Preparation for the Final Debate • Students work in teams to research and prepare for the final debate. • 3 debate topics are provided. • In-class time is dedicated to: o Argument development and refinement. o Evidence gathering and analysis. o Practice debates and peer feedback. o Individual consultations with the instructor. |

| 第 16 週 | Final Debate: Formal Public Forum Debate • Students participate in a formal Public Forum Debate, choosing one of the three previously announced topics. • This debate serves as their final assessment. • Emphasis on demonstrating mastery of all Public Forum Debate skills. • Clear guidelines and evaluation criteria will be provided. |
