課程概述與目標: Course Description This course offers a practical, hands-on approach to translation, with a strong emphasis on weekly practice using news articles in both English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English directions. Through these consistent, real-world applications, the course aims to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills vital for translators in the news industry. Each week, you’ll translate one or two paragraphs in class from four specially selected articles. Students are expected to be active participants, engaging in self-analysis, self-critique, peer reviews, and presentations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the translation process. Additionally, we’ll explore how to leverage online applications and digital tools, including AI chatbots, to refine and enhance translated works. We’ll also discuss the evolving role of the translator in the digital age. By the end of the semester, you’ll have four polished translated works (two English-to-Chinese and two Chinese-to-English) ready as samples, which can be invaluable if you’re looking to pursue a career in the news industry. Note: The selected articles cover important current global events. They don’t reflect the lecturer’s political stance, and the lecturer doesn’t show favoritism toward any political ideologies or parties. Course Objectives To equip students with skills and knowledge of translation. To help students develop robust problem-solving and decision-making abilities for overcoming translation challenges. To foster a clear understanding of the professional demands and nature of a translator’s role. To prepare students with the essential skills and adaptable strategies for working as a translator in the age of AI chatbots, including how to effectively utilize and critically engage with these technologies.
