This course is a basic mechanics course as one of the compulsory courses in the Department of Civil Engineering. Fundamental static analysis will be taught including, but not limited to: force equilibrium analysis, friction, calculation of the first moment of area and the moment of inertia, calculation of center of gravity and centroid, simple analysis of internal force of members, simple analysis of truss structure, etc. With the fundamental knowledge of Statics, students can continue to take courses in solid mechanics such as Mechanics of Materials, Structural Analysis, and Dynamics. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand and explain the fundamental concepts of statics, including equilibrium, forces, moments, friction, and internal forces in structures. 2. Apply vector operations to analyze force systems in two and three dimensions. 3. Determine geometric properties of areas and bodies such as centroid, center of gravity, first moment of area, and moment of inertia. 4. Analyze equilibrium conditions of particles and rigid bodies using principles of force and moment balance. 5. Perform basic structural analysis, including trusses, beams, and frames, and identify internal forces within members. 6. Solve engineering problems systematically by applying mechanics principles to practical situations in civil engineering. 7. Develop problem-solving habits by working through examples, assignments, and quizzes, enhancing both independent learning and teamwork skills. 8. Communicate reasoning effectively in written solutions and discussions, improving technical English used in civil engineering contexts.
N/A
1. Lecture with guided explanations: Each class introduces core concepts of statics, linked to civil engineering practice, with emphasis on clarity in English instruction. 2. Worked textbook examples: Selected examples from the textbook are solved step by step in class to demonstrate problem-solving strategies. 3. Homework assignments: Problems of each chapter are given to reinforce concepts and encourage independent practice. Solutions will be discussed in class or posted online. 4. In-class activities and quizzes: Short activities such as quick quizzes or concept checks will be used to engage students actively and provide immediate feedback. 5. Learning support: Teaching assistants will assist with homework collection and Q&A. Students may also use university resources such as the library, learning support center, and online platforms for additional practice.
1. Midterm Exams (25% + 25%) and Final Exam (25%) Three closed-book, pen-and-paper exams. Questions will include conceptual understanding and problem-solving applications. 2. Homework (20%) Regular pen-and-paper assignments based on textbook problems. Each homework may include an optional bonus activity (e.g., challenge problems, small reflections, or applied tasks). Completing bonus activities will add extra points to the homework grade. Not attempting them will not reduce the score. 3. Attendance and Participation (5%) Evaluated through random in-class activities such as short quizzes, problem-solving checks, or small group tasks. Students are encouraged to stay engaged in class discussions and activities.
