Overview: This unit introduces students to materials science engineering. It conveys the fundamental knowledge of the relationships between material structure, properties, and performance. The knowledge learned will provide a basis for the analytical skills necessary for materials design, selection, and processing. Learning objectives: At the successful completion of this unit, you will be able to: 1. Identify the main classes of engineering materials such as metals, alloys, ceramics, electronic materials, polymers, and composite. 2. Analyse the macroscopic behaviour of engineering materials under the influence of atomic and microstructural features. 3. Identify how structure and processing affect material properties. 4. Identify how the band gap of a material influences its optical and electronic properties. 5. Apply mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties of materials for engineering design to meet various operational requirements such as failure prevention.
