Teaching Methods: Lectures and Presentations In-class Discussions Pre-class Group Discussions to Prepare for the Final Report 1. Semester Assignments, Exams, and Assessments 1. Semester Assignments • Weekly assignments are designated by the instructor of the respective week. If no specific assignment is given, students must submit a weekly reflection of at least 400 words as their assignment for that week, to be submitted before the next class. 2. Exam Arrangements • The format and necessity of exams are determined by the respective instructors for each topic. 3. Assessment Methods (1) Attendance Policy This course places great emphasis on class participation. Students are encouraged to organize their thoughts and express their questions or opinions during class. • Absences (Unexcused Absences) o Students who have two or more unexcused absences will automatically fail the course. o Each unexcused absence results in a 20-point deduction from the final grade. o If a student is absent without prior approval, they must apply for leave within one week and consult the instructor about remedial measures. Late applications will not be accepted, and students are advised to withdraw from the course in advance if necessary. o If an absence is due to force majeure, the student must notify the instructor via email and obtain approval. The leave request must then be completed within one week through the university’s official leave system for it to be considered an excused absence. o Please note that only leave requests submitted through the university’s system are considered official. Requests made verbally or in writing directly to the instructor or TA are not valid. • Leave of Absence o Each student may apply for leave up to four times per semester (including official business leave, sick leave, and menstrual leave). o Leave applications must be submitted in advance through the university system. The course instructor determines whether the reason qualifies as force majeure. • Remedial Measures for Absences o Students who miss class due to an approved leave request must complete additional assignments as designated by the instructor. o If the assigned make-up work is not completed within the given deadline, the absence will be recorded as unexcused. o Completed make-up assignments will be graded and factored into the student's regular coursework score. ________________________________________ (2) Tardiness & Early Departure • Attendance is taken weekly. Upon arrival, students must check in with the TA. • Students who fail to check in upon arrival will have their attendance recorded according to their actual check-in time, and no disputes will be accepted. • If a student checks in more than 20 minutes after class starts, the TA will record the exact time of arrival. • Definition of Tardiness & Early Departure o Late arrival exceeding 20 minutes or leaving early by more than 20 minutes is considered tardiness (or early departure). o The total time of tardiness and early departure exceeding 20 minutes is also considered tardiness. o If the total tardiness/early departure time exceeds 40 minutes, the student is considered absent for that session. • Penalties for Tardiness & Early Departure o Three instances of tardiness/early departure = one unexcused absence o Five instances = two unexcused absences (course failure) o Each instance of tardiness/early departure results in a 20-point deduction from the weekly grade. • Request to Remove Tardiness/Early Departure Record o Students who wish to have their tardiness or early departure record removed must formally apply for leave according to official procedures. If approved, the tardiness/early departure record will be changed to an excused absence. • Advance Notification of Tardiness or Absence o If a student knows in advance that they will be late or absent, they must email the TA and instructor before class and submit an official leave request through the university system. o Late leave applications will not be accepted. Exceptions may be granted by the instructor for extraordinary circumstances, but the leave request must still be completed within one week after the missed class. ________________________________________ (3) Online Classes & Attendance Policy • If the course is conducted online, the following regulations apply: o Attendance will be tracked using Google Meet Attendance List to ensure transparency. o Students must pay close attention to their online status and avoid extended disconnections. o If a student is offline for more than 20 minutes, they will be marked tardy. o If a student is offline for more than 40 minutes, it will be counted as an absence. o Three instances of tardiness = one absence o Five instances = two absences (course failure) o Students must log in on time and ensure a stable internet connection to avoid being marked absent. (2) Grading Criteria • Weekly Reflection Reports (65%) • Individual Semester Reflection Compilation Report (5%) • Final Group Discussion Presentation (30%) ________________________________________ a. Weekly Assignments (Pre-Class, In-Class, or Post-Class Work) – 10 Weeks in Total Each instructor will assign weekly coursework, which may include quizzes, in-class activities, pre-class preparation, or post-class assignments. The instructor will evaluate submissions based on content depth and quality, with the final score being an average of all submitted assignments. Assignment Submission Guidelines: 1. Each week’s assignment will be based on the lecturer’s instructions, such as reflections, specific exercises, or quizzes. Assignments must be submitted within one week of the class. 2. If no specific assignment is given, students must submit a 400-word (including punctuation) "Course Summary and Personal Reflection" as their graded assignment. o 2.1 Course Summary: A factual summary of the lecture content. Minimum 100 words. o 2.2 Personal Reflection: The significance and impact of the course, along with personal thoughts, opinions, or evaluations. Additional comments can be added at the end. o 2.3 Submission Deadline: Weekly assignments must be submitted by Wednesday at 1:20 PM, one week after the class.  Example: For a lecture held on September 4, the reflection must be uploaded by September 11 at 1:20 PM. 3. Submissions not meeting the 400-word requirement or those deemed unclear, nonsensical, or AI-generated will be returned for revision. Students must resubmit within three days and email the TA to request another review. 4. Final Compilation Submission: o By December 31, 2025, students must compile all individual assignments in chronological order. o At the beginning of the compilation, students must include a 200-word semester reflection, which will serve as the final individual assignment. o Format: Cover Page + Semester Reflection + Weekly Personal Reflections. o Late submission penalty: 1 point deducted per day (maximum deduction: 5 points). Assignments submitted beyond the deadline will not be accepted. b. Final Group Presentation (30%) This course includes one midterm group discussion and one final group report. Students will form groups of five, ensuring that members come from different core specializations or unrelated disciplines (e.g., a student specializing in computer science cannot form a group with other computer science majors). During the semester, each group will independently select a topic for exploration, which may involve issue discussions, action-based projects, design innovations, hands-on experiments, exploratory activities, book clubs, travel documentaries, hometown research, family history investigations, artistic creations, documentary filmmaking, music composition, or various types of activities (such as sports, arts, music, academics, and technical projects). The only requirement is that the topic must be substantial enough to warrant a group presentation of at least 10 minutes and must align with the Baichuan Program’s interdisciplinary exchange philosophy. • Week 7: Proposal Presentation (5%) – Each group must deliver a 5-8 minute presentation explaining their project idea, followed by 5 minutes of feedback and suggestions from classmates. (Revised to: Arete Course Final Project Plan) • Week 16: Final Presentation (10%) – Each group will present their final work for approximately 12 minutes, with written peer feedback submitted during the session. • Final Written Report (15%) – After the course concludes, each group must compile and incorporate peer feedback into a written report of at least 2,000 words, which must be submitted by January 6. ________________________________________ Assignment Format and Academic Integrity Regulations 1. Citations & Plagiarism o Any quotation, summary, or paraphrase of another person’s work must be properly cited within the relevant passage using an academic citation format. o Additionally, all referenced sources must be listed in a reference section at the end of the document. o Failure to provide proper citations and references will be considered plagiarism. 2. Use of AI Tools o Unless explicitly approved by the instructor, the use of AI-generated content is strictly prohibited. o Violations will result in immediate rejection of the assignment, requiring a rewritten submission. o If the student fails to resubmit the assignment within three days, it will be marked as missing for that week. 3. Consequences of Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct o Minor infractions (e.g., incomplete citations or improper paraphrasing) will result in the assignment being returned for revision within three working days. o Failure to resubmit within the deadline will result in a zero grade for that week’s assignment. o Intentional or serious academic misconduct (e.g., deliberate plagiarism or major violations) will result in an automatic failing grade for the entire course.
