The course is designed to improve student’s English speaking, discussion, and presentation for graduate level activities. By the end of the course, students will be able to: - develop effective oral communication skills in English - deliver a 3-minute persuasive presentation on an academic topic - make impromptu speaking responses with good structure and specific details - organize, plan and work with peers on presentations - assess peers and provide constructive feedback - reflect on learning experience
*第一堂課必須要到。無法到課務必到學校請假系統請假,確保名額保留。無故缺席,會把名額留給當天想人工加選的學生! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus in the first class. If you cannot come to class, you must go on our school's "Student Leave System" and fill in the official absentee form to reserve your spot in the class. If you are absent without prior notice, your spot will be given to other students that came to class.
Attend all classes: Being on time to class as an active learner is very important in this course. You MUST be on time if you want the full attendance score of that day. If you arrive 10 minutes late, you will NOT get any points for that day. Attendance will be taken in every class. If you do not come to class, you will receive NO attendance or in class participation marks unless you have formal documentation and evidence of emergency. If you have a serious emergency, please contact me via email or talk to me in class in person directly. If allowed, we will discuss the new deadline and made up work should be submitted on time. Note that some in class group activity scores are not possible to make up and will result in 0 points even if you have an excuse. The following can be excused with formal documentation as evidence: Health emergencies: medical documentation from a hospital Personal emergencies: documentation or discussion with me in person about the situation The following will not be excused absences: School competitions, conferences, interviews, travel plans, overslept or forgot, and any other activities that is not an emergency. I reserve the right to decide whether you are allowed to make up work or be marked as excused. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time to come to class. Participate: Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Language use: Please use English as the main language of communication even in discussions with your peers. It is an English class so the more you practice, the better! 😀
15% Attendance Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. 25% Participation This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. Part 2 80% Students will make a 3 minute individual presentation on an academic topic related to their research to a non-specialized audience. Part 3 10% The recordings will be uploaded. Students will re-listen/watch their response and finish a revision worksheet to improve and learn from their own mistakes. Audio file name: 1. Name_recording 25% Group Presentations - Tips/How to/Unbox/Compare best something Students will deliver a group presentation sharing something they know that is useful, interesting and relevant to this class’ students (approved by the teacher). Your presentation can include activities/content that encourage class participation. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class. You will also have a Q&A session to answer questions from your classmates. The entire class (teacher and students) will assess your performance via a google forms grading sheet. Your final score is not just given by the teacher; it will be an average of the score input by ALL the participants. Time allocation: Time: 20-25 minutes (4 groups) Q&A session: 5-7 minutes 10% Final Audience Assessment Students have the responsibility to understand the grading criteria, seriously participate in classmate’s presentations and give a fair assessment score. Your score WILL impact the final score of your classmates so please take this part seriously. You need to input well thought out scores for ALL the different groups to get full credit for this part. If you fail to participate or do this part recklessly, you will not get any points for this part.
