Language is said to be a mechanism that pairs sound with meaning. However, within such a system, we still can observe a number of cases in which part of sentences ‘disappears’ while the meanings of these sentences remain intact. This class will touch upon the so-called ellipsis constructions in language. We start this class by looking at null-subject sentences in Romance languages like Italian, and then turn to Mandarin Chinese. Ellipsis constructions in English, like VP-ellipsis constructions, will be addressed as well. In addition, we will discuss other ellipsis constructions, like sluicing, argument ellipsis, and nominal as well as verbal fragment answers. Through cross-linguistic comparisons, we will find that languages that do not belong to the same language families still can share a number of syntactic properties with respect to ellipsis.
