言談分析

Discourse analysis is a broad and complex interdisciplinary field, which encompasses diverse theoretical and methodological approaches from linguistics, sociology, and anthropology. This course will focus on three main approaches to discourse of talk-in-interaction: Conversation Analysis (CA), Interactional Sociolinguistics (IS), and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). While CA examines the discourse structure within talk-in-interaction, IS investigates how the micro structure of talk-in-interaction is interconnected with culture and social categories, and CDA focuses on discourse and power, examining how social inequality is mediated through discourse. Applications of these approaches to the Language Socialization (LS) paradigm will be explored as well. Students will learn how these approaches and paradigms have been used to understand classroom interactions, online interactions, and interviews and how discursive practices are interrelated with learning, identity construction, and the macro sociocultural and political forces. The overall goals of this course are for students to gain: • An appreciation for the use of discourse analysis in research in general and L2 classroom research in particular. • An expansion of research repertoires to include discourse analytic approaches to research. • Insights that will inform and improve classroom teaching and human communication.

There is no required text. All reading materials are available on the class website on New e3. The readings may be changed to better fit research and teaching interests of the students.
