Fundamentals of Systems Engineering (SE) introduces students to a modern and logical method of managing the development and life-cycle of complex projects and products. The objectives of SE include: simplifying development process, minimizing risks and the study of different paths from concepts to final product.
Prerequisite: • Basic algebra, calculus. • Basic coding in C++, Matlab, Python or others. • Technical graphing ability (via coding or Excel). • CAD proficiency optional but recommended. • Prior experience with technical or other project optional but recommended.
=== OBJECTIVE=== This class is first and foremost aimed at training participants in the thinking approach of a Systems Engineer, and how to leverage this systematic approach to engineering problems. Therefore, the class will involve numerous projects that count towards grading, in addition to exams. As a graduate-level class, you are expected to complete relevant textbook readings and seek relevant resources on your own. Classes will chiefly highlight key concepts from the textbook, and provide exercises/examples as related to these concepts. ===EXPECTATIONS=== • You should aim to join every class. Any information you missed due to unannounced absence will be considered your responsibility. Graded in-class exercises that you miss due to unannounced absence will be considered your responsibility. • Arrive to class on time and to stay for the entire class period (or until dismissed). Random arrivals and exits are disrespectful and distracting. • Be prepared to take notes during class. • Make a request if you wish to take a photo of slides/blackboard writing. Unannounced photo-taking is considered rude behavior. • Be respectful of the views of other students.
Subject to changes: Exam 1 : 20% Exam 2: 20% Project Part 1: 30% Project Part 2: 30% Project deliveries may include written report, engineered prototypes, as well as in-class presentations/exercises. No make-up exams or project late-submission will be given. You are expected to structure your schedule to make it to the exams and project deadlines.
