The purpose of this course is to provide the enrolled students with the knowledge of transportation risks, especially for operational and safety risks. The ultimate goal is to equip them with the professional skills and capability of managing transportation risks. The main theme is to emphasize the applications of risk management concepts and principles to transportation planning, operation, control, and management. The first half of this course will be discussing the fundamental aspects of risk management, including the basic concepts, principles, and applications for operational and safety risks. The second half will be focusing on transportation risk management-related research and modeling. The course consists of the following modules: 1) risk management modeling, 2) interactions among institute, environment, transportation mode and operator, 3) human factor, 4) safety management system, and 5) transportation security risk management. After finishing this course, the students are expected to have a better understanding of the complicated issues concerning transportation risk management and possess, the necessary knowledge, tools, and techniques for tackling transportation risk management problems.
Fundamentals of Transportation
Pedagogy and other supplementary information (websites, TAs, handouts and/or databases): the instructor will be preparing the handouts for each topic of the course outline, supplementary materials in terms of academic papers and research reports will be periodically distributed.
(1) Homework and Assignments: course participation, group reports and term paper preparation are the main assignments during the semester. (2) Exams and Quizzes: none. (3) Evaluation and Grading Policy: the final grade will be evaluated by the following components: 1) course participation (10%), proposal presentation (30%), 2) midterm progress report (30%), 3) term paper presentation (30%).
