This course focuses on building academic English skills at the B2 level to prepare students for academic success. Approximately 80% of the course content is academically related. It aims to enhance students' academic English reading abilities and develop academic discussion skills based on critical reading of and reference to source materials (e.g., opinion essays, periodicals, and special reports). In this class, students will read the source materials with enhanced fluency following effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view). Academic discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats, including whole-class analysis of topical issues, problem-solving group work, or short individual oral presentations. By the end of the course, students will learn to: a) Understand the main idea and key information of source materials. b) Understand and synthesize information from source materials and make appropriate inferences. c) Infer the authors' opinions, attitudes, and writing purposes d) Lead and participate in effective group discussions, and refer to source materials in group discussions e) Integrate information from source materials, and summarize key points clearly and accurately f) Describe, compare, and make inferences on source materials g) Formulate arguments based on the source materials and support arguments with sufficient details and evidence h) Give formal presentations by stating a position, presenting an argument, and answering related questions
* Students must come to the first class meeting to guarantee enrollment unless special conditions are noted in advance. *
To receive full credit for course attendance, students must arrive at class on time and participate in the full session. Only 2 excused absences are allowed. After that, 20 points will be taken away from your attendance grade for each of your absences. Submit a leave petition via the NYCU online system/學生請假系統 if you are not able to participate. Students are required to complete reading assignments before coming to the class. Quizzes will be given in class to ensure your completion of the reading assignment. During the weekly class time, students will be engaged in whole-class discussion, pair and group discussion, role plays, and debates. These in-class activities require you to complete worksheets individually or in groups. Participation in these in-class activities and worksheet complement will be a part of your course grade. In addition, your student peers will evaluate your performance based on their experience/observation of working with you in small group discussion. The mid-term and final exams aim to evaluate students' vocabulary and reading competence in the various topics covered in class. Students will work in a small group to further investigate one of our weekly topics by reading at least 4 extra articles of their choice and presenting their findings to the whole class in English. In the oral report, you need to introduce the issue you work on, summarize what you have learned about this issue based on the articles you read, critically evaluate the value and assumptions taken by these authors, and consider alternative perspectives. Please include references to your source information in your oral report. *Please note that the course schedule and content listed in the syllabus are tentative. Minor changes and adjustments might be made to accommodate unexpected circumstances. *Up to 5 bonus points will be given to participating in the following autonomous learning activities (0.5 points for each stamp).
