概述

A good leader is well informed. It is not enough to just have the highest level of technical knowledge, but rather you must have a solid and broad understanding of what is going on in the World around you. The aim of this course is thus to enhance students' understanding of issues affecting the World right now, while at the same time enhancing the English reading and listening skills required to acquire this knowledge and the communication skills necessary to discuss them at the highest level. In this class, students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view). Discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats including whole-class analysis of topical issues, problem-solving group work, or short individual oral presentations. Listening skills will be developed through authentic news broadcasts, online video content and satirical TV series. Approximately 50% of the course content is related to academic and professional contexts. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: - Understand and respond to spoken and written English used in everyday, social, and general academic contexts - Communicate effectively using appropriate vocabulary, tone, and conversational structure - Express personal ideas, opinions, and experiences clearly and confidently in a variety of general settings - Demonstrate the ability to comprehend, summarize, and discuss information from general texts, academic text, and media sources
