The course aims to develop students’ intercultural competence for the globalized world where English has become the common medium for international communication. It focuses on developing attitudes, knowledge, skills, and critical cultural awareness in intercultural communication. Upon completing the course, students will be able to: -understand the fluidity and multiplicity of English use in intercultural communication by using diverse verbal and non-verbal ---communication strategies -develop an open and curious attitude toward one’s own culture as well as those of other cultures. -acquire knowledge of one’s own cultural practice and perspectives as well as those of other cultures -critically evaluate perspectives, practices, and products in one’s own and other’s cultures -reflect on their own culture through understanding cultural differences -expand their repertoire of human relationships *Please note that the course schedule and content listed in the syllabus are tentative. * Students must come to the first class meeting to guarantee enrollment unless special conditions are noted in advance.
Students should come to the class with the assigned homework completed and are expected to participate in class time activities actively. To receive full credit in attendance, students must arrive to class on time and participate in the full session. Only 2 excused absences are allowed. After that, 20 points will be removed from your attendance grade for each absence. Submit a leave petition via the NYCU online system/學生請假系統 if you are not able to participate. During the weekly class time, the class will read text/watch video clips on language and culture issues related to intercultural encounters and respond to the reading/video input through oral discussion or written reports. Students will be engaged in various class activities, such as whole-class discussion, pair and group work, and role play. Some of the in-class activities require students to complete assignments in advance. Assignment completion and participation in these in-class activities are requirements and will be a part of the course grade. The intercultural contact project aims to develop students’ intercultural communication competence through live intercultural exchanges. Students will have opportunities to interact with a person from an exotic cultural background and learn about the cultural artifacts/values from each other. Students will share the intercultural contact experience and reflect on the experience in a written report and an oral presentation. The final exams aim to evaluate students' understanding of the various topics covered in class. *The assessment and course requirements are tentative. They may be modified based on situational contexts.
