Course Description: The course aims to develop students’ intercultural competence for the globalized world where English has become the common medium for international communication. It focuses on developing attitudes, knowledge, skills, and critical cultural awareness in intercultural communication while engaging them in using English. Upon completing the course, students will be able to: - understand the fluidity and multiplicity of English use in intercultural communication by using diverse verbal and non-verbal communication strategies - develop an open and curious attitude toward one’s own culture as well as those of other cultures. - acquire knowledge of one’s own cultural practice and perspectives as well as those of other cultures - critically evaluate perspectives, practices, and products in one’s own and other’s cultures. - reflect on their own culture through understanding cultural differences - expand their repertoire of human relationships.
Freshman to Senior students are accepted as this is a content-based class.
Midterm exam: 20% Final exam: 20% (Midterm & Final exam: 50% listening & reading paper-written test + 50% oral presentation) Culture PPT report: 15% (Students find their favorite culture topics and create a PPT report) Individual oral presentation: 15% (for PPT report) Attendance & Participation: 10% In-class individual presentation: 10% (writing or speaking) In-class mini group dialogue practice: 10% (with a partner)

| 第 9 週 | Festivals and celebrations: Let’s party hard! Pair group dialogue practice (2nd) |
| 第 10 週 | Bingo game of Taboos: do as the Romans do. Pair group dialogue practice (3rd) |
| 第 11 週 | Loanwords: do you know where these borrowed words come from? In-class individual presentation (3rd) |
| 第 12 週 | I found identical twins of idioms and phrases between English and another foreign language Euphemism: explanation and exercise |
| 第 13 週 | Make up topics, presentations or dialogues Guide students to design their culture PPT report |
| 第 14 週 | Finalize PPT report and discuss it with teacher |
| 第 15 週 | Individual oral presentation: students have to present their PPT report for 5 minutes. |
