This course is an introduction to news in English. Students will read, listen to and discuss a wide range of texts demonstrating the value and variety of journalistic English. Throughout the semester, students will learn about the different rhetorical strategies that accompany different discourse forms. The course objectives are as follows: 1. To increase the student's ability to read, comprehend and discuss topical news articles in English. This includes the following skills: a. Identifying and analyzing points of view, arguments and implicit information; and differentiating between fact and opinion. b. Leading and participating in effective group discussions. c. Recognizing and using various grammatical structures, especially characteristics of journalistic English. d. To raise social consciousness and sharpen political awareness through reading and interpreting news coverage.
Prerequisites *第一堂課必須要到! 沒到的學生,會被自動退選! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus on the first class. Unless you have a good reason, please do not be absent. If you are absent without prior notice, you will be automatically removed from the list. *無法到課務必到學校請假系統請假,確保名額保留! If you cannot come to class, you must go on our school "Student Leave System" and fill in the official absentee form to reserve your spot in the class. *本課大多是實體課程,搭配部分線上課能。第一堂課會細部說明。 The majority of this class will be in the physical classroom with some online classes via Webex. The teacher will provide details on the first day.
Attend all classes: Being on time to class as an active learner is very important in this course. Attendance will be taken in every class. If you do not come to class, you will receive NO attendance or in class participation marks unless you have formal documentation and evidence of emergency. If you have a serious emergency, please contact me via email or talk to me in class in person directly. If allowed, we will discuss the new deadline and made up work should be submitted on time. Note that some in class group activity scores are not possible to make up and will result in 0 points even if you have an excuse. The following can be excused with formal documentation as evidence: Health emergencies: medical documentation from a hospital Personal emergencies: documentation or discussion with me in person about the situation The following will not be excused absences: School competitions, conferences, interviews, travel plans, overslept or forgot, and any other activities that is not an emergency I reserve the right to decide whether you are allowed to make up work or be marked as excused. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time to come to class. Participate: Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Language use: Please use English as the main language of communication even in discussions with your peers. It is an English class so the more you practice, the better! 😀 Online tools Webex: In case of some emergencies, all students have the responsibility to be able to get online smoothly with both microphone and webcam working. You will get attendance points ONLY if you have all equipment ready. If you come online but with no mic or no webcam, you will NOT get the attendance score for that day. Google drive: You are expected to have a google drive and webex account. Almost all worksheets, homework, quizzes, and tests are online and require an account. If you don’t have those accounts set up yet, please do this for homework.
Attendance 10% If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. Participation 20% This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. The more you participate, the higher your score will be. Discussion leaders 20% Students will be split into groups (4-5 students). During group discussion leader weeks, groups will work together on two chapters (20-40 minutes for each chapter) chosen by the instructor. During the session, you will choose one discussion leader that will lead the team to accomplish the intended learning outcomes. Generally, the team will read the article, go over new vocabulary, and do some of the book activities to assist comprehension. After you understand the reading, your team will contribute to constructing the assessment that all students will later on do. Midterm Exam 25% This will be an online timed exam on the content learned in class. Final Exam 25% This will be an online timed exam on the content learned in class.
