概述

This course is an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) winter intensive course designed for learners at the CEFR B2 level. The course focuses on developing students’ academic listening, note-taking, critical thinking, and discussion skills through exposure to authentic academic lectures, academic talks, news reports, and discipline-neutral academic topics commonly encountered in university-level study. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Comprehend extended academic listening texts at the CEFR B2 level, including lectures, academic talks, and news reports, by identifying main ideas, supporting details, and implicit meanings. 2. Demonstrate effective academic listening strategies, such as structured note-taking, recognizing discourse markers, and following logical argumentation. 3. Analyze speakers’ viewpoints, arguments, and evidence in academic listening materials. 4. Summarize, paraphrase, and respond critically to academic listening content in spoken and written academic formats. 5. Participate actively in academic discussions, expressing and justifying opinions using appropriate academic language.

第 1 週1/6 Introduction + Theme: Cultural Literacy + Academic News Listening Topic: Urban Fire Incident in Hong Kong This introductory unit establishes an EAP foundation by examining cultural literacy as an academic concept in education, social sciences, and intercultural communication. Students engage with academic lectures and academic news reports selected for their formal register and relevance. Through guided pre-listening, structured note-taking, and analysis of spoken discourse, students develop academic listening skills. An integrated task requires students to role-play as reporters and deliver a 2.5-minute oral news briefing, demonstrating accurate summarization, logical organization, and CEFR B2-level academic speaking proficiency.
第 2 週1/12 – Urban Development and Transportation Systems Listening Focus: • Academic lectures, policy talks, and reports on urban infrastructure, city planning, and transportation systems. Tasks & Activities: • Listening to a 5–10 minute authentic lecture or policy briefing. • Structured note-taking exercises. • Small-group discussions to synthesize information. • Vocabulary review and application in sentences. 1/13 – Education, Economy, and Workforce Development Listening Focus: • Academic or semi-academic talks on education systems, lifelong learning, and workforce development strategies. Tasks & Activities: • Listening to 5–10 minute lecture excerpts or reports. • Structured note-taking and mind-mapping exercises. • Pair or group discussions to analyze content. • Oral presentations summarizing key points.

The listening material is presented in a lecture-style format and focuses on academic definitions, classifications, and theoretical explanations of aggression, including physical, verbal, and relational forms. Students are expected to recognize logical organization and abstract explanations characteristic of academic discourse.
