概述

This course focuses on the geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundations, including spread footings, mats, driven piles, and drilled piers. Coverage includes a review of soil mechanics, subsurface exploration, bearing capacity, settlement, and lateral load capacity of various foundation types. If time allows, seismic considerations will be discussed as well.

Assignments: • You can work together but must turn in your own solutions. • Each student is responsible for preparing her/his own homework and displaying understanding of the principles behind the homework solution. • Assignments are due in class before lecture starts on the specified due date. • 10% grade reduction will apply to any homework submitted within the 24 hours following the deadline. • Late homework, beyond the 24 hours window, will not be accepted. • The appearance of the homework will be graded as well. To obtain the maximum grade, the submitted homework must have an appearance expected from a professional engineering report: letters and numbers must be easily readable; all calculations must be presented in the proper sequence in one column and explained neatly in words. All graphs and schematic drawings must be presented at a proper scale, labels, units, straight lines drawn with the straight edge or by software. Do not use spiral bound paper! Any homework that is sloppy or difficult to understand will be returned for resubmission and will receive a reduced grade by 30%. Conduct in lecture: Please conduct yourself in a respectful and professional manner in class. • All students are expected to turn off cell phones, iPods, iPads, and laptops during lecture hours to avoid distracting other students and the professor. If you use an iPad for the purpose of taking notes, please communicate this with Prof. Hwang after the first lecture to receive approval and sit in the front row. Use of laptops is not allowed in class, unless specified by the professor. Use of these devices is going to distract you and others and will, therefore, not be allowed. • Students and faculty each have responsibility for maintaining an appropriate learning environment. Professional courtesy and sensitivity are particularly important with respect to individuals and topics dealing with differences of race, culture, religion, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, and nationalities. • The National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University policy on Sexual Harassment and Amorous Relationships apply to all students, staff, and faculty. Any student, staff, or faculty member who believes she/he has been the subject of discrimination or harassment based upon race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status should contact the University’s Office of Military Training (hereafter, the OMT) at 0972-705-757 or (03)5712121#31339. Participation: Classroom participation is required: • Class attendance is in accordance with the published university course schedule. • Campus policy regarding religious observances requires that faculty make every effort to deal reasonably and fairly with all students who, because of religious obligations, have conflicts with scheduled exams, assignments or required attendance. Honor Code: Violation of the honor code will not be tolerated. If you are found to violate the honor code, you will receive an “F” for the course, regardless of the degree of academic dishonestly. • The engineering profession does not need, and should not tolerate, dishonesty. • All students of the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University are responsible for knowing and adhering to the academic integrity policy of this institution. Violations of this policy may include: cheating, plagiarism, aid of academic dishonesty, fabrication, lying, bribery, and threatening behavior. Students who are found to be in violation of the academic integrity policy will be subject to both academic sanctions from the faculty member and non-academic sanctions (including but not limited to university probation, suspension, or expulsion). Special considerations: • If you have a disability and require special accommodations during lecture hours or exams, please provide Prof. Hwang with a letter from Disability Services outlining your needs during the first two weeks of class. • If you have a conflict as a result of religious observances, please notify Prof. Hwang at least 1 week in advance of the exam or assignment due date.
