This course aims to prepare the students with basic concepts about evidence-based medicine and some understanding of the study design, statistics, data analysis, critical appraisal of common research types, as well as evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. After completion of this course, the students should be able to read an article and understand its implication for evidence-based medicine. After taking the course, students will be able to 1. Understand basic concepts about evidence-based medicine. 2. Describe the study design, statistics, data analysis, and critical appraisal of common research types. 3. Read a research article and understand its implications for evidence-based medicine. Students will be divided into 8 groups and work with the group throughout the semester to complete the process of evidence-based clinical decision-making. Meanwhile, students have the opportunity to read and appraise scientific articles as a group and apply the scientific findings to guide clinical decision-making. The brief processes are 1. Each group will receive a mock case. Students will identify a clinical question and search for 2 randomized controlled trials to answer their clinical question. 2. Students will be provided with structural guidance to comprehend the chosen articles. They are required to practice reading 1 article in the class. 3. For the final assignment, students are required to read the other article and complete the appraisal worksheet. In addition, students have to synthesize the findings of the two articles and come up with a clinical decision. 4. For the final presentation, students should summarize the two articles’ findings and their synthesized clinical decisions.
