1. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, you will be able to, 1. Have the basic concepts of emerging pollutants in environmental health, 2. Understand impacts of epigenetics on environmental epidemiology, 3. Describe principles of newly developed methods for exposure assessment, 4. Critically analyze epidemiological studies in environmental health. This includes the critical evaluation of the study design, exposure assessment, diagnosis of diseases, and the authors’ interpretation of the findings.
Target Audience and Course Format: PhD Student or MS student who have fundamental concept of epidemiological study design and statistical analysis are encouraged to take this course. We will have 3 course modules and 1 final project that will be carried out throughout the semester. For each module, an invited lecturer will deliver a topic related to the paper that will be discussed and critiqued in the following two weeks. Students will work in group for the final project as well as the 2 technical discussion. All the professional knowledge and critique skills will be used for the final presentation that will be a debate on a latest controversial topic. 4. Class Participation (20%) An active participation is encouraged throughout the courses. Students’ participation is an important component for the class and will be accounted for 20 % of overall performance. Homework Assignments (40%) A series of classical papers in environmental epidemiology will be distributed at the beginning of the course. Students will systematically evaluate their scientific soundness and write a critique within 5 pages prior to each Case Study. Working as a group is strongly encouraged but each student must hang-in their own answers. An in-depth discussion for each Case Study will be conducted with the interaction between instructors and students, as well as based on students’ critiques. Group Project (40%) Students will work in groups at the beginning of the semester. Groups will debate on a specific environmental hazard and systematically evaluate their scientific evidence based on the observational and experimental studies. Students will also extend their findings to how could the summarized findings to be implemented into policy decision. Each group must meet the Instructor for every Technical Discussion (totally 3 times), and will present their work at the last week of semester. The grade of group project will be based peer’s and instructor’s evaluation.
Grading Criteria: 20% Class participation 40% Homework assignment (critiques on 2 scientific papers) 40% Final project
