概述

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles of glycobiology. It covers the fundamental concepts and biochemical background of glycan biology, with a particular emphasis on glycosyltransferases and glycosidases, illustrated through the study of sialic acid as a representative example. The course concludes with an exploration of the physiological and pathological roles of sialic acids in malignant diseases. Learning objectives 1. Comprehend and apply core principles of glycobiology to understand the biosynthetic pathways and functional roles of complex glycans in cellular systems 2. Elucidate the structural and mechanistic properties of glycosyltransferases and glycosidases, integrating concepts from enzymology and structural biology 3. Distinguish key reaction mechanisms within transferase families and interpret their multifunctional enzymatic activities across biological contexts 4. Critically analyze the contribution of aberrant sialylation to cancer pathogenesis, including its roles in promoting metastatic potential, modulating cell-cell interactions, and facilitating tumor immune escape
