We will first introduce different model organisms, discuss their advantages and disadvantages in using them to study neuroscience. Next, we will discuss how these animal models were used for research in neuroscience and the research advances that have been accomplished using these models. Finally, we will discuss future frontier questions in neuroscience that remain to be pursued and how these model organisms will help to address these questions. A list of model organisms includes: Mosquitos Caenorhabditis elegans Drosophila melanogaster Zebrafish Danio rerio Mus musculus Primate macaque Pig Human homo sapiens
1. Attendance and active participation (60%) 2. Midterm: a one-page English summary on the model organisms covered so far. Pick one among the ones covered (15%) 3. Final: a final term paper (3-5 pages in English) describing a scientific question you want to address using one of the model organisms (25%)
