This course consists of four hours per week and is structured around a multi-context, multi-stage learning model integrating lectures, hands-on practice, discussions, and industry engagement, in alignment with the core learning objectives. The first hour adopts a flipped classroom approach combined with concise lectures to introduce fundamental concepts, experimental principles, and operational procedures. The following two hours are dedicated to group-based laboratory practice and data collection, allowing students to deepen their understanding of probiotic characteristics and applications through hands-on experience. The final hour focuses on group discussion, synthesis of results, and formative feedback, thereby establishing a continuous and reflective learning process. The course is conducted in a small-class format, with approximately five students per group (ten students in total), and employs both problem-based and project-based learning approaches. Each group works on thematic tasks involving microbial strain handling, product design, and market analysis, culminating in a final product proposal at the end of the semester. In addition, the course incorporates cross-context learning activities, linking classroom instruction, laboratory work, field sample collection, and industry visits. This design enables students to integrate knowledge and practical skills across diverse learning environments. The course is delivered entirely in English and is supported by two international Ph.D. student teaching assistants, who facilitate group discussions, provide instructional support, introduce global case studies, and assist with experimental preparation and demonstrations. This arrangement enhances both learning support and students’ cross-cultural communication skills. To further increase engagement, the course integrates online interactive tools, such as Mentimeter for anonymous feedback, Kahoot for review quizzes, and Padlet and Line for real-time discussions. These tools help foster interaction and active participation. To strengthen academia–industry linkage, the course includes three industry visits and guest lectures by industry professionals. These activities allow students to understand the full process of probiotic product development, from research and production to market positioning. During these visits, student groups also present and refine their product ideas with feedback from industry experts, thereby reinforcing practical application and deepening the overall learning experience.

This course consists of four hours per week and is designed based on its core objectives as a multi-context, multi-stage learning model integrating lectures, hands-on practice, discussions, and industry engagement. The following two hours are devoted to group-based laboratory practice and data collection, allowing students to deepen their understanding of probiotic characteristics and applications through hands-on experience. The final hour focuses on group discussion, synthesis of results, and formative feedback, thereby establishing a continuous and reflective learning process. The course is conducted in a small-class format, with approximately five students per group (ten students in total), and incorporates both problem-based and project-based learning through thematic assignments. Each group engages in microbial strain handling, product design, and market demand analysis, progressively developing a final product proposal by the end of the semester. The course also includes cross-context learning tasks, linking classroom instruction, laboratory work, field sample collection, and industry visits, enabling students to integrate knowledge and practical skills across diverse settings. It is delivered entirely in English and supported by two international Ph.D. student teaching assistants, who facilitate group discussions, provide instructional support, present global case studies, and assist with experimental preparation and demonstrations, thereby enhancing both learning support and students’ cross-cultural communication skills. To promote engagement, the course incorporates online interactive tools such as Mentimeter for anonymous feedback, Kahoot for review quizzes, and Padlet and Line for real-time discussions, fostering active participation and interaction. In addition, to strengthen academia–industry linkage, the course includes three industry visits and guest lectures by industry professionals. These activities help students understand the full pipeline of probiotic product development—from research and manufacturing to market positioning. During these visits, student groups also discuss their product concepts and receive feedback from industry experts, further reinforcing practical application and deepening the overall learning experience.
1. Course Participation and Learning Process (25%): Assessment is based on class attendance, participation in discussions, engagement with online interactive tools (Mentimeter, Padlet, Kahoot), and group collaboration. This component evaluates students’ involvement in knowledge acquisition, real-time interaction, and self-reflection. Teaching assistants will provide regular feedback based on group discussions and documented learning progress to encourage sustained engagement. 2. Practical Skills and Data Analysis (25%): Students are evaluated on their proficiency in laboratory techniques, quality of record-keeping, ability to interpret data, and problem-solving skills. This component also includes performance in cross-context tasks (e.g., sample collection, experimental analysis, and linkage to industry applications), aiming to strengthen the ability to apply foundational knowledge in real-world settings. 3. Final Group Project and Oral Presentation (50%): The final project integrates learning outcomes from the entire course and includes: analysis and presentation of experimental results, reflections on industry visits and understanding of industrial processes, and probiotic product design with SWOT analysis of market opportunities. Evaluation will be conducted jointly by the instructor and teaching assistants, with additional feedback from industry professionals to enhance students’ understanding of product development and market demands.
