Enzyme-coupled receptors: classification and signaling pathways 5. Ion channels: Structure and function PART II - Membrane-bound receptors and diseases: 6. Cancer and Aging 7. Pain and Rheumatology 8. Mood Disorders and Neurodegenerative Disorders This course offers a comprehensive introduction to signal transduction pathways mediated by membrane-bound receptors, which play a crucial role in responding to numerous extracellular signals. These receptors, including G-protein-coupled receptors, enzyme-linked receptors, and ion channels, are vital not only for understanding cellular responses but also for their significance in disease regulation and as promising drug targets. In fact, over 50% of all marketed medications are designed to interact with these membrane-bound receptors. The course is structured into two key sections: (I) An engaging introduction to membrane-bound receptors, covering their structures, functions, and the various signaling pathways they are involved in; (II) A thorough examination of the link between membrane-bound receptors and diseases, focusing on how these receptors influence disease mechanisms at a molecular level. Moreover, the course highlights cutting-edge applications of these receptors in the fields of pharmacology and clinical medicine, providing valuable insights into their potential to shape future therapeutic strategies.
