Important note: Our first class meeting will be held at Soochow University (第二教研大樓8樓D0825室). This seminar is a face-to-face course on the Yangming campus and Soochow University. This seminar will be co-taught by Professors Jonathon Hricko (NYCU) and Hsuan-Chih Lin (Soochow University), and the meeting places will alternate between these two campuses. Physical attendance is required for students who enroll in this seminar. The teaching and discussion of this seminar will be conducted in English. Please see the course schedule for the meeting place for each class meeting. Metaphysics is the systematic study of the fundamental nature of reality. It addresses questions about which aspects of reality are fundamental, how to understand the non-fundamental aspects of reality in terms of the fundamental ones, and how to understand various features of reality (e.g., causation, modality, and composition) in terms of these fundamental aspects of reality. One important approach in contemporary metaphysics uses the tools of analytic philosophy to formulate and address such questions. Another approach draws on the sciences in various ways to formulate and address such questions. In this course, students will learn about these approaches by reading some of the recent literature in metaphysics and discussing it with their classmates and the instructors.
Logic / 邏輯學 (Course number: GECE30001) or equivalent. Please contact the instructor at jhricko@nycu.edu.tw if you have any questions.
By completing this course, students will gain a solid background in some contemporary work in metaphysics and philosophy of science. Students will learn about this work through a combination of reading, lecture, and discussion. And they will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of this work on the midterm and final papers and oral exams.
Midterm paper + one-on-one oral exam with the instructor: 45% Final paper + one-on-one oral exam with the instructor: 45% Attendance and Participation: 10% In order to receive full credit each week, students must attend the entire class meeting; otherwise, no credit will be given. Students who are more than 10 minutes late to class, or who leave class before the end of class, will be counted as absent, and will not receive their attendance and participation credit for that week. Absent students can receive their attendance and participation credit if their absence is excused. In order to receive an excused absence, students must submit their request for leave via NYCU’s Student Leave System (學⽣請假系統) and have their request approved. No attendance and participation credit will be given for unexcused absences. Students who are absent for more than six course meetings (whether excused or unexcused) will receive a failing grade for the course.
