概述
本課程有兩個主要目標。其一是介紹給學生近年以東亞（以台、日、韓、中為主）的科技與社會研究作品，這部分會以East Asian Science, Technology and Society: An International Journal這本期刊為選材來源。開課老師會帶領學生細讀選文，熟悉不同作者理解、分析與書寫不同主題的方式。其二是藉此閱讀過程，強化學生的兩種能力，第一是撰寫論文與投稿的實戰能力，第二則是以東亞為起點的思考方式。前一個能力攸關於學生成為日後學者的基本歷程，也就是寫作、投稿、出版等學術必經程序；後一個能力則是作為一個非歐美出身的學者所必須持續自我意識、批判與反思的能力。因此本課程既是一個文本閱讀與分析的訓練，也是一個思考立場與視野的訓練；是一個概念擴充的嘗試，也是實際寫作的練習（期末報告會要求學生以英文撰寫一篇書評）。這些教學與學習過程將會成為科技與社會研究與教學的養分，對於目前社群討論的台灣STS讀本的設計也有參考之功。
