This course will introduce the relationship between language and culture, as well as language and culture in English communication interactions to develop language and communicative abilities at the B2 level. This course aims to cultivate students’ ability to analyze culture through language and theoretical analysis and to study the relationship between language and culture to help learners master the cultural differences between their own culture and English-speaking culture. In addition, it will explore respectful cross-cultural communication interactions, such as learning about language and physical expression of cultural taboos, etiquette, and social interaction. This is to help students that support meaningful engagement with diverse communities in both local and international settings. Throughout the course, students will learn to: 1. understand the fluidity and diversity of English use in intercultural communication by using multiple verbal and non-verbal communication strategies 2. explore the relationship between cultural and linguistic topics, such as the impact of cultural value systems on language and nonverbal behavior 3. develop an open and curious attitude toward students' own culture as well as those of other cultures 4. analyze cross-cultural communication issues 5. critically evaluate and reflect on perspectives, practices, and products in one's own and other's cultures 6. define cultural values to discuss the theoretical structure of culture and the characteristics of different cultural groups, such as comparing the similarities and differences between cultures 7. .expand their ability to connect and interact in human relationships
This is an English Medium Course.
The teaching methods include lecturing, group discussion, video watching and other intercultural communication game activities as supplements. In addition, the final presentation will offer students a chance to compare different cultures and utilize cross-cultural communication skills to present their cultural understanding in a clear and effective way.
1. Mid-term exam (Written exam on course content) 25% Description: Students are presented with intercultural dilemmas or misunderstandings (realistic case studies) and asked to respond in written English. Assessment Focus: Openness, problem-solving in intercultural settings, appropriateness of language and tone. 2. Oral Presentation (Group presentation of cultural topic analysis) 30% Description: Students analyze and compare a cultural product, event, or social practice from Taiwan and another culture. The grading of the presentation will focus on these dimensions: content and structure organization, pronunciation, fluency, volume, eye contact, effectiveness of visual aids, analysis of topic using theories and concepts in this course, identify cultural values, interpret practices, and recognize ethnocentric perspectives. 3. Film Viewing In Class Activity Writing 15% Students watch videos and utilize the culture theories and topics learned in class to analyze the cultural issues in the videos. Format: Writing of the video cultural analysis in English with a minimum 200 words. 4. Attendance and Participation (In-class discussion and activity) 25% 1. * If you need to take leave of absence, please remember to follow the school procedure for taking leave of absence and make sure the form is approved. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Points will be deducted each time for students who are late to class, leave early, or are absent without notice. LEAVE of ABSENCE OR ABSENCE WITHOUT NOTICE over 2 times will result in a failing grade. 2. Use of Generative AI for this class is generally not suitable, but it is acceptable using Generative AI only for checking grammar...etc. Other usages such as translating from Chinese PPT to English or asking similar software to brainstorm/organize ideas for assignments is not acceptable. Please let the instructor know clearly if and how you utilized generative AI for assignments. 3. Engaging in activities unrelated to the course will affect your participation grades. 4. Please write assignments and exams yourself and do not cheat. Once found, the assignment will be graded as zero. We do not accept bonus assignments. 5. Please submit your assignments on time. A failing grade will be given for the late assignment.
